Genting itself began in 1965 when its ambitious founder, Sri Lim Goh Tong, came up with the ground-breaking idea to build a resort like no other, perched on the peak of Mount Ulu Kali near Kuala Lumpur in Malaysia. To this day, our sister brand Resorts World Genting is still Malaysia’s most popular destination attracting almost 20 million visitors a year.

Genting first came to life under the guidance of founder Tan Sri Lim Goh Tong back in 1965, ahead of the development of the development of the Genting Highlands Resort. The name Genting, which means, graceful or elegance, was born out of the surroundings and position of the Highlands resort and one that remains synonymous with the premium brand it remains today.

Opening of Genting Hotel (now known as Genting Grand), the flagship hotel of the resort

Public listing of Genting International PLC, Genting Power moves into China

Kuala Langat Power Plant operations commence, Genting Oil & Gas formed, opening of Maxims Hotel, Resorts World Langkawi and Kijal.

Tan Sri Lim Goh Tong hands over the chairmanship of the Genting Group to Tan Sri Lim Kok Thay

Our sister brand Resorts World Genting in Malaysia set the tone for what was to become one of the world’s largest leisure and entertainment companies in the world. 

Going from strength to strength, Genting expanded globally, securing its international fame with the opening of further Resorts Worlds in Malaysia, Singapore, the Philippines, New York, the UK and the Bahamas, with a unique Chinese-themed Resorts World opening on the Las Vegas Strip in 2020. 

In addition, the company has moved into other areas such as property, cruise liners, biotechnology and power generation, with corporate social responsibility and sustainability at its heart. 

Today, the Genting Group has over 60,000 employees around the world, prime resorts land covering 4,500 hectares and multiple awards across its different sectors. 

This means as of 2018 we had 58 million visitors across our entertainment brands.

Genting first came to the UK in 2004 with the purchase of the famous Maxims Casino in Knightsbridge, London. This was followed by the acquisition of casinos across the UK in 2006, including the prestigious Crockfords, Colony Club and The Palm Beach casinos located in Mayfair, London. 

This instantly made Genting one of the largest leisure companies in the country with 42 casinos nationwide employing over 4,000 employees. The opening of the £150m Resorts World Birmingham in 2015 further enhanced this status. 

Since then, Genting has bought, refurbished and built brand new premises across the UK, taken the exclusive Crockfords brand to Egypt with Crockfords Cairo and grown its online casino and sportsbook offering. With online expansion planned into Europe, Genting continues to grow and expand.

In June 2019, Genting brought its online casino and sportsbook under the GentingBet brand. This provides a premium, distinctive and socially responsible online gaming experience that draws upon Genting’s many years of expertise from around the world.

As such, GentingBet offers customers an experience that stands above the competition, with ‘best in show’ live casino games, unique in club live casino tables from our exclusive land based casino’s like Crockfords and a wide range of premium sporting markets and offers.

Authentic Gaming
In October of 2019, Genting acquired live dealer solutions Authentic Gaming. Genting’s latest acquisition is one of the industry leaders in broadcasting live casino content from land-based casinos from around Europe and the US.

This significant partnership that looks set to reap dividends with the Genting casino estate at their fingertips and Authentic games already available to play on our platform.

Safer Gambling

We are extremely proud of the fact that we are the first gambling company to achieve the Safer Gambling Standard, the social responsibility quality standard for the gambling industry developed by national charity GamCare. Genting achieved the highest level of award following a thorough assessment.

The Safer Gambling Standard recognises gambling operators who go above and beyond the requirements of gambling industry Licensing Codes and Conditions of Practice (LCCP).

The Standard comprises 10 sets of assessment criteria for social responsibility for both online and land-based gambling businesses, developed and updated each year out of the available evidence, industry best-practice, and input from those who have experienced gambling related harm.

The Standard is awarded at an entry level and at three Advanced Levels, giving operators a clear roadmap for improvement.

As the leading provider of problem gambling support across Great Britain, GamCare is working to minimise gambling-related harm and to drive up overall standards of social responsibility practice across the gambling industry, making gambling safer for consumers.

The wide-reaching new Standard reviews organisational policies and procedures, digital and in-person interactions with customers, protections for young and vulnerable people, training and development, and the culture of the business regarding its approach to social responsibility. 

Supporting our local communities across the World
Genting continues to support communities throughout the world, however the determined efforts through their life sciences division to find a cure and support dementia sufferers remains unmatched. In 2019, the Genting Group celebrated its Founder's Day by handing over a purpose-built dementia day care centre to the management team of the Geriatric Division at University Malaya.


Recognising the need to have a dedicated facility for people with the disorder, the Genting Group together with UM’s Geriatric Division developed the centre to provide care for patients suffering from dementia.


Located in Segambut, Kuala Lumpur, the centre is designed to accommodate up to 50 patients at a time.

Partnerships

In 2019 one of the world’s most respected football journalists Guillem Balague, joined GentingBet in an ambassadorial role. Guillem’s knowledge of global football is unmatched and for twenty years he was a leading figure at Sky Sports and their coverage of Spanish football, appearing weekly on their Revista de La Liga show.
